What does it take to become a BCBA?

Becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst takes five stages: a qualifying master's degree, 315 classroom hours of behavior-analytic coursework, supervised fieldwork of 2,000 hours (or 1,500 hours of Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork), a pass in the BCBA examination, and — in most states — a separate state license to practise. Certification is national and issued by the BACB; licensure is state by state and is what actually lets an employer put you on a caseload. Fieldwork is the stage that decides your timeline, because hours count only between 20 and 130 in any calendar month.

The five stages, and where people get stuck

The sequence itself is well documented by the BACB and rarely surprises anyone: qualifying degree, verified course sequence, supervised fieldwork, examination, then state licensure. What derails people is almost always stage three. Coursework can be bought and scheduled. Fieldwork depends on another human being — a qualified supervisor with capacity — and on an employer willing to structure your week so the hours are actually accruable.

That is a hiring problem as much as an academic one, which is why it belongs on a recruitment site. When we place someone pre-certification, the questions that decide whether they finish on time are about the job, not the programme: who supervises, how many hours a week are protected, whether restricted and unrestricted activities are tracked properly, and what happens to the arrangement if the supervisor leaves.

The BCBA certification requirements in full

The requirements below are the BACB's, taken from the current BCBA Handbook. They are the same in every state, because certification is national — what changes by state is the licence you apply for afterwards.

Two numbers do most of the work in a plan. Coursework is 315 classroom hours, distributed across defined content areas rather than left to the programme. Fieldwork is 2,000 hours under the standard route, or 1,500 hours under Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork, which asks for more supervision contact in exchange for fewer hours.

Doing your fieldwork inside a job that will still want you afterwards

Most people accrue fieldwork while working as an RBT or behavior technician. The pay for that period is technician pay — currently advertised around $20/hr – $30/hr on the roles we see — and the temptation is to optimise for the highest hourly rate available. That is usually the wrong optimisation. A dollar an hour is worth far less than a supervisor who runs overlaps reliably and a caseload varied enough to cover the task list.

Ask three things at interview: how many BCBAs are on site relative to technicians, whether supervision time is protected in the schedule or expected on top of billable hours, and what proportion of trainees at that site certified within their expected timeframe. The last question is the one employers rarely expect and the answer is diagnostic.

Get the supervision arrangement in writing, including what happens if your supervisor leaves.
Check whether unrestricted activities — assessment, programme writing, caregiver training — are genuinely available to you, or whether the role is direct hours only.
Record hours monthly as the BACB requires rather than reconstructing them later.
Confirm who owns the fieldwork documentation if you change employer mid-route.

What certification changes in the market

The gap between technician pay and BCBA pay is the largest single step in the ABA workforce, which is why the route is worth completing even when it is slow. Advertised BCBA ranges on the roles we recruit currently sit at $75k – $115k; the assistant-level BCaBA band sits at $52k – $72k.

Certification also changes what employers ask of you. A newly certified BCBA is being hired to own clinical quality on a caseload and to supervise the technicians delivering the hours. Supervisory capability, not assessment technique, is what most employers screen hardest on at first interview.

Where new BCBAs actually get hired

Center-based and hybrid ABA providers hire the majority of newly certified BCBAs, because they can absorb a first caseload alongside experienced clinicians. Schools and IDD services take fewer newly certified analysts but hold them longer. Early intervention sits in between and tends to want candidates with real caregiver-training confidence.

If you are geographically flexible, licensure processing time in your target state matters more to a start date than anything on your resume. Check the board's timescale before you accept an offer with a fixed start.
