BCBA exam requirements
Eligibility is decided before you ever book a seat. This is what has to be in place, how the exam itself is built, and what changes for anyone certifying from 2027.

What are the requirements to sit the BCBA exam?
What has to be in place before you can book
The exam is the last gate, not the first. The BACB approves your application before Pearson VUE will let you schedule a seat, and an application is only approved when the degree, the coursework and the fieldwork all stand up on their own. Most delays we see are documentation delays: fieldwork reconstructed after the fact, a supervisor who has moved on and cannot verify hours, or a course sequence that was never confirmed as accepted before enrolment.
That is why the practical advice for anyone still accruing hours is administrative rather than academic. Record fieldwork monthly as the BACB requires, keep your own copies of every verification form, and get the supervision arrangement in writing, including what happens if your supervisor leaves the organisation.
| Requirement | Who signs it off | Where it goes wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Qualifying master's degree | University, against BACB rules | Programme not confirmed as acceptable before enrolment. |
| Behavior-analytic coursework | University / course provider | Standalone sequences for career changers need checking against the current requirements. |
| Supervised fieldwork | Your supervising BCBA | Hours not recorded monthly, or unrestricted activities never made available. |
| Approved BACB application | BACB | Missing verification documents. Nothing can be scheduled until this clears. |
| Exam appointment | Pearson VUE | Seat availability in your area during peak periods. |
Requirement detail is published by the BACB and changes periodically; the board's own handbook is the authority.
How the exam itself is built
The BCBA examination is multiple choice, with four possible answers per question and one correct answer. It contains 185 questions in total: 175 that count toward your result and 10 unscored pilot items being trialled for future forms, indistinguishable from the rest. Content is drawn from the 6th edition Test Content Outline, which organises the tasks into nine domains covering behaviour-analytic concepts and principles through to supervision and management.
Two things follow from that structure. First, the supervision and management content is examined, and it is the area candidates coming straight from direct-service roles most often under-prepare. Second, because ten items are unscored, a question that feels unlike anything in your preparation may simply not count — it is not a signal to abandon the section.
- Multiple choice, four options, one correct answer.
- 185 questions: 175 scored, 10 unscored pilot items.
- Nine content domains in the 6th edition Test Content Outline.
- Scheduled and paid for through your Pearson VUE account once the BACB approves your application.
The 2027 requirement change, and who it affects
The BACB has published new BCBA eligibility and maintenance requirements taking effect on 1 January 2027, alongside transition guidance for anyone whose application may straddle that date. If your timeline is uncertain — a part-time programme, a slow fieldwork accrual, a planned break — plan against both sets of requirements rather than assuming you will land before the change.
This matters commercially as well as academically. Employers hiring pre-certification trainees are also planning against that date, and the ones worth working for will already have a view on how it affects their supervision pipeline. It is a fair question to ask at interview.
Passing is not the same as being able to work
Certification is national. Practising is not. Most states now license behavior analysts separately, and payers increasingly require the state credential rather than the BACB certificate alone. Board processing time, not the exam, is the usual reason a newly certified BCBA's start date slips.
Advertised pay on the BCBA roles we recruit currently sits at $75k – $115k, against $20/hr – $30/hr for the technician roles most people hold while accruing fieldwork. That step is the reason the administrative grind is worth finishing properly.
Questions people ask
- How many questions are on the BCBA exam?
- 185 in total: 175 scored questions plus 10 unscored pilot items. Every question is multiple choice with four options and one correct answer.
- Can I book the BCBA exam before my application is approved?
- No. The BACB must approve your certification application first; you then schedule and pay for the examination through Pearson VUE.
- What is changing for BCBA applicants in 2027?
- New BCBA eligibility and maintenance requirements take effect on 1 January 2027. The BACB has published transition guidance for applicants whose timeline crosses that date; if yours might, plan against both sets of requirements.
- Do I need a state license as well as passing the exam?
- In most states, yes. BACB certification is national; licensure is state by state, and it is usually the licence — not the certificate — that lets an employer put you on a caseload.
