Do BCBAs need a state license?

In most states, yes. BCBA certification is issued nationally by the BACB and travels with you; the licence or registration that legally permits you to practise is issued by an individual state board and does not. The practical consequence is a start date: employers and payers increasingly require both, and board processing time — not your resume — is the usual reason a start slips. The table below sets out where each state stands, using the same notes our state job and salary pages carry.

Why certification and licensure are not the same thing

The BACB certifies individuals against a national standard: degree, coursework, supervised fieldwork and the examination. It does not grant anyone the right to practise. That right is granted by a state, usually through a behavior analyst licence, sometimes through registration with a psychology or health professions board, and in a small number of states not at all.

This catches relocating clinicians out more than any other part of the route. A BCBA moving between states keeps the certification and starts the licence again. Where a state has no separate licence, the employer's payer contracts usually impose their own requirements instead, so 'no licence' rarely means 'no paperwork'.

Behavior analysis also has no interstate compact. PSYPACT, the Counseling Compact and the Social Work Licensure Compact cover other professions; none of them lets a BCBA practise across state lines. Anyone telling you otherwise is describing a different credential.

Planning a move so the licence is not the thing that delays you

The sequence that works is boring: apply to the board before you accept a fixed start date, get your BACB certificate and transcripts ready to send in the same week, and ask the employer in writing what happens to the offer if the board is slow. Most employers will hold a start date; almost none will do it retrospectively.

Apply to the board as soon as you are serious about the state, not after you sign.
Ask the employer whether they reimburse licence fees — many do, and few advertise it.
If you will hold licences in two states, budget for both renewal cycles and their separate CEU rules.
Check whether the state licenses assistant-level and technician staff too; it changes how you can build a team.
