RBT retention: what actually stops the churn
Most RBT attrition is structural, not attitudinal. These are the parts of the job that decide whether a technician is still there in twelve months.

Where technicians actually leave
RBT retention is a scheduling problem before it is a pay problem. Guaranteed hours, cancellation policy and travel radius decide whether a hire lasts a year.
- Cancelled sessions that turn a full-time offer into part-time pay
- Unpaid drive time between in-home clients
- Supervision that gets rescheduled whenever the analyst's caseload spikes
- No visible path from RBT to BCaBA or BCBA, so the job reads as a stopgap
What the roles that hold staff do differently
- Guarantee hours, or pay a retainer when sessions cancel
- Pay drive time and mileage between clients as a stated policy
- Protect supervision in the calendar; High volume, high turnover. The providers who win here pay for drive time, guarantee hours and promote from within; the ones who do not are permanently hiring.
- Fund and timetable the supervision hours behind a BCaBA or BCBA path
- Publish the hourly band. RBT roles are compared hour by hour, and an unpublished rate is read as a low one.
| Role | Advertised range |
|---|---|
| RBT | $20/hr – $30/hr |
| BT | $18/hr – $25/hr |
| BCaBA | $52k – $72k |
| BCBA | $75k – $115k |
Ranges reflect what we typically see advertised on roles we recruit for in the US. They are a market guide, not a survey, and vary by setting, caseload and experience.
Questions people ask
- What is a realistic RBT pay rate?
- RBT roles we recruit are typically advertised between $20/hr – $30/hr, with guaranteed hours and paid drive time worth more to most technicians than a small increase on the base rate.
- Does a career path really affect RBT retention?
- It affects who applies. A technician who can see funded supervision hours and a named route to BCaBA or BCBA treats the job as a career step; without that, the role competes with every other hourly job in the area.
